’Tis the season to be jolly, to drink and be merry. Well, obviously I’m talking about Oktoberfest, the Bavarian beer festival. And if you think I’m posting this in the wrong month, maybe that’s traditional: just as Cambridge has its May Week in the month of June, so Oktoberfest begins in September…
Oktoberfest isn’t entirely about beer. It’s also about pretty girls wearing the traditional Alpine dirndl costume, often in abbreviated sexy versions:

But it doesn’t take much to get the Bavarians into traditional costume, into the party spirit and into some beer. Every summer, there is also a ‘Trachtenfest’, or fancy dress festival, which the Munich restaurant Bachmaier Hofbräu celebrates with a party punningly entitled ‘Eine Tracht Prügel’. The English translation will be obvious from the way it was advertised in 2012…
