Kiss Me Kate: 1976

What has come down to us from 1976, as far as Kiss Me Kate is concerned, amounts to an amateur production in England and seven high school productions in the US, three of which can’t be dated any more precisely than the 1975-76 school year. The first of the honorable exceptions is the one at St Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, which ran for six performances between January 24 and February 7. Sadly the photographer only managed to snap the bottom half of Ronnie Komar’s Lilli, though at least Rich Roller’s Fred is just about in the frame:

There was better work at the April 2-3 production at Alliance High School, Ohio, in which John Dawson spanked Ellen Slimack:

A month later, and on another continent, May 3-8 saw Joan Vaughan being spanked by Peter Carpenter in the Rushden Amateur Operatic Society production in Northamptonshire, England. The cover of the program may have told Joan what to expect…

And Dalton High School, Georgia, featured this spanking of Andrea Freedman by Larry Richman:

The three dateless school productions follow in alphabetical order, beginning with Borger High School, Texas:

The production at George Washington High School, Philadelphia, starred Charles Koch as Fred, and he had two different Lillis to spank, Linda Leidy in the first performance and Dorothea Haug in the other two. There’s no record which of them appears in the photograph:

And no chance of identifying her by facial recognition either!

Here’s another hidden-faced Lilli in a rehearsal shot from St John’s College High School, Washington, DC:

Moving into another school year, we travel to Bloomfield, Iowa, where the musical was staged November 18 and 19 at Davis County High School. Here are Paul Gentry and Margaret Clover in rehearsal:

And with that we move on to another year!

I’m actually surprised at how frequently the spanking scene has been used over the years to publicize a local production of Kiss Me Kate. I realize it may be the most famous scene in the play and displays, humor, action and a involves the two leads but as this post amply displays Kate’s face is often [but not always of course] obscured. I can picture the excited high school senior girl clinging to the newspaper and excitedly telling her adoring parents, “Look my picture’s in the paper” They look and then comes the reality…”Wow, our daughter’s butt made page two”. A great collection of bicentennial beauties.

i always enjoy your finds for the play as i always enjoy finding more scenes of the famous play and it is great how many plays that you have seen or found over the years. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.
